NAYAGAON, Chandigarh: Residents of Adarsh Nagar, Nayagaon, which borders Chandigarh, are living under the constant threat of epidemic spreading in their area but the Ropar district administration is just turning a blind eye towards their problem.
Due to heavy rain since Wednesday night, this colony which is in a low lying area, has been inundated with water.
The district administration has expressed its helplessness saying that the colony is illegal.
"We fear that some water borne epidemic might spread in this area. Already people are suffering from diseases like gastroenteritis and diarrhoea," said K S Chadha, a resident.
The colony does not have a proper sewer system. There is no water supply and people have dug up handpumps and tubewells for meeting their water needs. There is also a danger that the handpump water may also get contaminated.
"We talked to the deputy commissioner but she expressed her helplessness saying that the colony was illegal. We gave a representation to the secretary, rural development, but he also expressed helplessness in helping us in any way," said Alka Sharma, a resident.
